Chapter 1. Basic Troubleshooting Methodology

There are two basic approaches to troubleshooting: the stab-in-the-dark approach and the systematic approach. The stab-in-the-dark approach usually involves little knowledge of the technology involved and is completely random in nature. A systematic approach, on the other hand, involves a step-by-step approach and requires in-depth knowledge of the technology.

Very occasionally, the stab-in-the-dark approach can work, but the more complex the technology (and virtual private networks [VPNs] are definitely complex), the less likely that the stab-in-the-dark approach is going to be effective.

This chapter, therefore, introduces a step-by-step, systematic approach to troubleshooting that is detailed in the remainder of the book. If you are going to troubleshoot VPNs in a fast and efficient manner, this approach is definitely the one to adopt.
